Facebook is one of the most popular websites in the world, with as I write this over 300 million active users.
I must admit that I am not a Facebook user as I have tended to resist social media (the likes of Twitter, MySpace and Facebook) – but I am increasingly looking like the exception rather than the rule!
I don’t think the growth in Facebook’s user numbers is even close to its plateau yet, meaning there is clearly a massive potential audience available on Facebook.
The key question here is – how can you benefit – and by benefit I mean make money – from Facebook’s popularity?
This number may have gone up (or down) by the time you read this but according to certain sources Facebook is making around 500 million dollars in estimated revenue a year.
How does it make that money? Largely through advertising.
And as this approach has worked so lucratively for Facebook maybe you can make it work for you as well.
By this I mean that you can perhaps think about advertising on Facebook. Advertise your business, your products, advertise your services, whatever it may be.
One real benefit of sites such as Facebook and MySpace is you can target your advertising on a massive scale.
You want to reach a very targeted niche audience? You can reach a very targeted niche audience via Facebook. Facebook has an application whereby you are able to find out the potential size of your target audience before you go ahead and place an advertisement on the Facebook website. Once you have researched who your audience might be you can focus on reaching particular niches.
Often TV and radio advertising is not particularly targeted. You are basically broadcasting your message to everyone. This is where sites such as Facebook really work. You can research and target your potential audience – by demographics such as age, where they live (location), even by type of work (occupation) maybe even where they went to school. For example I am sure there is a way to even advertise on Facebook just to Harvard Graduates if you wish to do that.
Here’s a very interesting case study of advertising on Facebook. It is finished now, but I am sure you are familiar with it – it was the Cash For Clunkers program (also known as the Car Allowance Rebate System) where the US Government offered rebates for everyone who bought a new car.
So with that as the backdrop, there was a marketing experiment done on Facebook whereby a few hundred dollars was spent on Facebook to advertise Cash For Clunkers to people who lived in a certain town. That was for a local car dealership. And the dealer was paying the online marketer who was doing this advertising experiment 10 dollars per advertising lead. So by spending just a few hundred dollars the marketer got 600 qualified leads and made 6,000 dollars.
So that is just an example of how you can make money with Facebook. And also with MySpace and many other social networks such as Bebo.
Because you are able to advertise in such a targeted manner this is a massively underutilized area of online advertising. So if your business is looking to market online do look into Facebook and MySpace because you are able to target potential customers to such a level that you might be very surprised at the possible return on investment.
